TIER 4 (GENERAL) STUDENT APPLICATIONS – maintenance funds requirement increases as of 1 July 2014

Whether you are making an out of country application to come to the UK to study or you are in the UK and plan to apply for leave to remain as a student, you should be aware that the maintenance funds requirement of the your application has increased as of 1 July 2014.

As part of all UK points-based system applications there is a requirement that the applicant provides evidence of a prescribed sum of money having been available to them for a prescribed period to cover their living costs whilst in the UK. This is referred to as the maintenance funds requirement.

As of 1 July 2014, the maintenance funds requirement for Tier 4 (General) Student applications to schools within inner-London has increased from £1000 per month to £1020 per month and for schools outside of London from £800 to £820 per month.

For out of country Tier 4 (General) Student applications and in-country applications to switch to a Tier 4 (General) Student visa, the applicant needs to provide evidence of up to 9 months living costs, and where the applicant is extending their Student visa – having ‘established presence' in the UK – they need only provide evidence of up to 2 months living costs.

For all Tier 4 (General) Student applications the applicant is required to provide evidence that the required sum of money has been available to them for a continuous 28 day period ending no earlier than 31 days before the date of application.

This means that, as of 1 July 2014, the maintenance funds requirement for all Tier 4 (General) Student applications to schools in inner-London, where the applicant does not have ‘established presence', is £9,180, and where they have ‘established presence' £2,040.

The maintenance funds requirement for all Tier 4 (General) Student applications to schools outside London, where the applicant does not have ‘established presence', is £7,380, and where they have ‘established presence' £1,640.

It should also be noted that the maintenance funds requirement for Tier 4 dependants has also increased as of 1 July 2014. The Tier 4 dependants of students at schools within inner-London will now need to show evidence of £615 per month per person up to a maximum of 9 months (£5,535) and for those at schools outside of London evidence of £460 per month per person up to a maximum of 9 months (£4,140). This sum of money having been available to the applicant for a continuous 28 day period ending no earlier than 31 days before the date of application.
