UK To Simplify Visa Rules To Lure AI Experts
The UK government is reviewing its visa policies in a bid to attract top-tier Artificial Intelligence (AI) professionals from around the globe, aiming to ramp up the industry and boost economic growth.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the UK recently unveiled its AI Opportunities Action Plan, a comprehensive strategy designed to enhance AI adoption and drive economic growth. This plan features nearly 50 recommendations, including initiatives to streamline immigration pathways for highly skilled talent.
One key proposal, Recommendation 21, highlights the need for new visa pathways that address longstanding barriers such as high costs and administrative complexity. These challenges have often deterred startups and international experts from relocating to the UK.
While the government has expressed partial agreement with this recommendation, it has emphasised reliance on its broader Industrial Strategy to attract global AI talent.
Commenting on the UK’s efforts, Ramesh Alluri Reddy, CEO of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, remarked:
“India’s AI workforce is growing rapidly, with professionals demonstrating skills 2.8 times higher than the global average. This positions India as a global leader in data analytics, cloud computing, and machine learning.”
“The UK government’s announcement reinforces India’s role as a key provider of AI talent. The revised immigration system, backed by Prime Minister Starmer, seeks to attract expertise from prestigious institutions like Carnegie Mellon University and India’s Institutes of Technology.”
Last year, the previous Conservative government introduced a series of new visa restrictions in response to pressure to reduce record-high legal immigration and lower annual arrivals by 300,000.
The measures included prohibiting many overseas workers from bringing family members to the UK and raising the salary threshold for skilled workers. A key concern among AI industry leaders is the extensive bureaucracy and high costs associated with hiring talent from abroad.
The Action Plan is expected to simplify the recruitment of international AI experts, enabling businesses to tap into top talent worldwide. It also aims to foster collaborations with global AI hubs, including India, to accelerate innovation and economic progress.
