Canada Implements Stricter Visa Requirements For Mexicans
Canada’s government is immediately reimposing the visa requirements for Mexican nationals visiting Canada.
On 29 February, Mexican citizens travelling to Canada will need to meet new requirements to travel to Canada.
Previously, all Mexican citizens were eligible to receive an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) to enter Canada.
The decision to reimpose visa requirements comes in response to a staggering surge in asylum claims from Mexico, escalating from 260 in 2016 to a staggering 23,995 in 2023—an alarming increase of over 9,000%, as per federal data.
Under the new rule, Mexican nationals who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorisation – an entry requirement for people who are visa exempt.
All other Mexican nationals will need to apply for a visa.
An electronic travel authorisation is for air travel only. For those eligible for an eTA, it is crucial to understand that if planning to enter Canada by car, bus, train, or boat, including cruise ships (even without disembarking), a visitor visa will be essential.
