Canada Offers Immediate Permanent Residency for Caregivers
Canada is taking significant steps to simplify the process for caregivers to come to the country and secure permanent residency upon arrival.
The federal government introduced two new pilot programs on June 03, 2024, designed to grant eligible caregivers permanent residency upon their arrival.
According to the government, eligible caregivers will be able to work for organisations that offer temporary or part-time care for individuals recovering from injury or illness.
Speaking in Toronto, Canada's Immigration Minister, Marc Miller announced that the pilots could launch as early as this fall.
These updated programs will replace two existing pilot programs that have brought thousands of caregivers to Canada but are set to conclude later this month.
“While these pilots have attracted many qualified individuals and their families to Canada and have helped provide in-home care, the need for caregivers continues,” Miller said, adding that the government has been consulting with caregivers and stakeholders to find ways to enhance the support these programs provide for newcomers.
Miller emphasised that with Canada's aging demographics, the demand for caregivers is growing.
“This is an increasing reality, not a decreasing one,” he said.
Eligibility Criteria for Pilot Programs
The demand for caregivers in Canada is increasing because of the growing population.
To be eligible for the program, you should meet the following requirements.
- Caregivers must secure a minimum of level 4 based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
- Hold the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma
- Have suitable work experience
- Receive an offer for a full-time home care job
The introduction of these pilot programs marks a significant milestone in Canada's immigration and caregiving landscape.
