Escalating Wildfires Prompt Urgent Travel Warning for Portugal

British holidaymakers planning to visit Portugal are being urged to remain vigilant after the country declared a “state of alert” due to dangerous wildfires ravaging parts of the nation.

With over 100 forest fires reported, emergency services are engaged in a massive operation to contain multiple blazes, primarily across the northern regions.

As of September 17, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issued an updated travel advisory for UK tourists, highlighting the severity of the situation.

In its statement, the FCDO emphasised the “significant number of forest fires” currently burning across Portugal, warning that conditions are rapidly evolving.

The Portuguese government has declared a state of alert until 11:59 pm on Thursday, September 19. This state of alert includes potential restrictions on access to forests and rural activities, with possible road closures due to thick smoke and ash making travel hazardous.

Is It Safe to Travel to Portugal Right Now?

The wildfires, which broke out on September 16, have mainly affected the northern and central regions of Portugal, leading to evacuations in several towns. The northwestern district of Aveiro has been hit hardest, with flames reaching the outskirts of Albergaria-a-Velha.

Fortunately, popular southern destinations like the Algarve remain unaffected by the fires. Additionally, there have been no reports of the blaze reaching Lisbon, though the main highway between Porto and Lisbon has been closed as a precaution.

The FCDO strongly advises UK visitors in Portugal to take precautions and stay alert.

It urges tourists to:

Avoid entering forested areas and regions at high risk for fires.
Follow the instructions of local authorities and evacuate if directed.
Stay informed of road closures or restrictions that could impact travel plans.
Call Portugal's emergency services at 112 if you spot a fire.
Be aware that starting a wildfire, even accidentally, is illegal and could result in fines or imprisonment.

With fires spreading unpredictably, travellers are reminded that safety measures, including evacuations and road closures, may be implemented without prior notice.
