For years, Americans visiting the UK have enjoyed a seamless entry experience, often simply scanning their passports upon arrival with little to no additional screening. However, starting January 8, 2025, this process will change as the UK introduces the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visa-exempt travellers.

Here’s everything you need to know about the ETA and how it will impact your future trips to the UK.

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital entry requirement designed to enhance border security while streamlining immigration processes. Similar to the US ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), the ETA is linked electronically to the traveller’s passport.

This system allows UK authorities to pre-screen travellers before they board their flight, assessing eligibility and ensuring smoother entry upon arrival.

From January 8, all US citizens visiting the UK without a visa must have an approved ETA.

The ETA application fee is £10 (approximately $13 USD) and will be valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETA.

With an approved ETA, American travellers can make multiple trips to the UK and stay for up to six months per visit for tourism, business, or family visits. Applications are usually processed within three working days, but applying early is recommended.

ETA Rollout Schedule

The UK is implementing the ETA system in phases:

Now Active: Nationals from Gulf States.
January 8, 2025: Americans and citizens of approximately 50 other countries.
April 2, 2025: Rollout expands to European travellers.

To avoid delays, submit your application well in advance of your travel date. And, make sure your passport has enough validity to cover your trip and the ETA’s duration.
