Brazil Tightens Travel Rules for North American and Australian Visitors

As of April 10, 2025, travellers from Australia, Canada, and the United States will need a visa to enter Brazil.

This move ends a six-year visa-free policy and comes as part of Brazil’s reciprocity principle, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government emphasised that Brazil does not offer unilateral visa exemptions, and it is currently working on establishing reciprocal visa-free agreements with these nations.

Despite the change, the US Embassy in Brazil confirmed that American citizens can still apply for a visa online via Brazil’s official eVisa portal.

In 2024, Brazil saw the arrival of:

728,537 visitors from the US
96,540 from Canada
52,888 from Australia

All of these travellers will now need an e-visa, which costs $80.90 and permits stays of up to 90 days. The requirement applies to all entry points via land, air, or sea.

Available Visa Options for Brazil

Travellers from countries not on Brazil’s visa-free list must obtain a visa based on their reason for visiting. Visa categories include:

Tourist Visa
Transit Visa
Business Visa
Work Visa
Student Visa
Digital Nomad Visa

The tourist visa remains the most commonly used option, drawing thousands of visitors annually.
