Schengen Visa Application: Which Countries Are in Highest Demand in 2024
The European Commission has released new data showing that in 2024, consulates of EU and Schengen-associated countries received over 11.7 million short-stay visa applications. This marks a 13.6% increase compared to 2023 (10.3 million applications) and a 56% jump from 2022 (7.5 million). However, the numbers are still below pre-pandemic levels.
Notably, Bulgaria and Romania began issuing Schengen visas on 31 March 2024, replacing their previous national visas.
In total, more than 9.7 million Schengen visas were granted in 2024—up 14.1% from the 8.5 million issued in 2023, but still shy of the 15 million approved in 2019.
The visa refusal rate dropped slightly to 14.8%, compared to 16% in 2023, suggesting a modest improvement in approval outcomes for applicants worldwide.

1. France – 3,072,728 Applications
France remains the most sought-after Schengen destination, with over 3 million visa applications received in 2024.
- Visas Issued: 2,549,735
- Visas Rejected: 481,139
- Rejection Rate: 15.8%
France’s rejection rate is slightly higher than average, meaning applicants should ensure all documents are in perfect order. Popular destinations like Paris and the French Riviera may drive high demand, but consulates can be strict with their criteria.
2. Spain – 1,634,887 Applications
Spain follows in second place with over 1.6 million applications, making it another hot spot for travellers.
- Visas Issued: 1,305,186
- Visas Rejected: 244,432
- Rejection Rate: 15.7%
Spain’s numbers show a fairly high approval rate, but its rejection rate is close to France’s. Make sure to meet all requirements, especially proof of accommodation and travel insurance.
3. Germany – 1,512,675 Applications
Germany received over 1.5 million applications, and stands out for a very high rate of issuing multiple-entry visas.
- Visas Issued: 1,291,988
- Visas Rejected: 206,733
- Rejection Rate: 13.7%
- Multiple-Entry Visas Issued (MEVs): 89.8%
Germany is relatively applicant-friendly, especially for frequent travelers, making it a strong choice for business or repeat visits to the Schengen Area.
4. Italy – 1,233,316 Applications
Italy received over 1.2 million applications and had one of the lowest rejection rates among the top countries.
- Visas Issued: 1,094,244
- Visas Rejected: 134,303
- Rejection Rate: 10.9%
With iconic destinations like Rome, Venice, and Florence, Italy remains a favourite for tourists. Its relatively low rejection rate makes it a viable option for first-time applicants.

For travellers applying for a Schengen visa, the data highlights some important considerations. France and Spain are the most popular destinations, but they also have relatively high rejection rates, so it’s crucial to apply early and ensure that all documentation is complete and accurate. Germany stands out as a strong choice for those seeking multiple-entry visas, making it ideal for frequent travelers. Italy appears to be one of the more forgiving options, with a high approval rate and moderate demand.
