UK to Raise Fees for British Passports in 2025

A British passport is an essential document for British citizens, enabling international travel and serving as proof of identity and nationality. Whether you're planning a holiday abroad, conducting business, or needing to verify your citizenship, a valid passport is key.

In a decision that will affect thousands of British holidaymakers, the government has announced a 7 percent increase in passport fees. Starting April 10, 2025, the UK government will raise passport fees affecting both online and postal applications. This comes after several years of price increases.

How Much Will It Cost?

  • Adult Online Application: £94.50 (up from £88.50)
  • Child Online Application: £61.50 (up from £57.50)
  • Adult Postal Application: £107 (up from £100)
  • Child Postal Application: £74 (up from £69)

If you need a passport urgently, there are premium or one-week fast-track services available.

For fast-track applications, the prices will also go up.

  • Premium 1-Day Adult Application: £222 (up from £207.50)
  • Premium 1-Day Child Application: £189 (up from £176.50)

For emergency situations like medical treatment or family matters, you can contact the passport advice line for assistance.

The current fee for Emergency Travel Document (ETD) is  £100 and will rise to £125 on April 9. The fee for an emergency passport, which is issued when an ETD is not possible, will also increase from £75 to £125 on April 9.

The price increase means passport fees have risen by 25% over the past two years, which is more than double the current UK inflation rate.

Why Are Fees Going Up?

The government says the increased fees are necessary to cover the costs of processing passports, supporting lost or stolen documents abroad, and other consular services. The aim is for the system to be more self-sustaining and less reliant on taxpayer funding. The government stresses that no profit is being made from passport applications.

UK passport holders travelling to EU countries, as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, need to make sure their passports meet specific entry requirements.

 Your passport must:

  • Be issued within the last 10 years.
  • Have at least three months of validity after the date you plan to leave.
  • Does not have any damages
  • Has 2 extra pages for passport stamps

Travellers are advised to renew passports in advance to avoid delays and extra costs. In the past year, 99.7% of standard passport applications were processed within three weeks in the UK, though it may take longer if applying from abroad.
