European Nations Update US Travel Advisories for LGBTQI+ Individuals

Several countries have revised their travel advisories for the United States (US) highlighting stricter entry policies and potential detention at US border points. Transgender and nonbinary travellers are specifically warned about the sex categorisation rules introduced through Trump's presidential executive order.

Reports of intense questioning, detentions, and entry denials have raised concerns among travelers and, according to experts, could harm the United States' global reputation.

Following similar warnings from Germany, Denmark, and Finland, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium have updated their travel advisories for LGBTQI+ individuals travelling to the United States.

France

France’s updated advisory informs travellers that they must state their “gender assigned at birth” when applying for a visa or ESTA.

The government also urges citizens to check the US Embassy in Paris for further updates.

Belgium

Belgium has announced significant changes to its travel advice for LGBTQI+ individuals planning to visit the United States.

This decision, confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stems from increasing border controls and a concerning shift in attitudes towards the LGBTQI+ community in the U.S. The modification to the advice is expected to be formalized by the end of this week.

The Netherlands

The Dutch travel advisory, which previously likened US laws to those in the Netherlands, now reflects the new restrictions.

It states that US authorities only recognise ‘M’ or ‘F’ as gender markers, per the January 20 decree. Dutch officials also caution that LGBTQI+ rights and social attitudes vary widely across US states.

Travellers are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions before visiting the US.
