SWISS Flight Cancellations: Routes Affected and Passenger Rights

Summer travel plans are being thrown into disarray after SWISS International Air Lines, one of Europe’s most reputable carriers, announced the cancellation of more than 1,400 flights due to ongoing pilot and aircraft shortages.
The disruption is expected to last until at least October 2025.
The cancellations are affecting major UK airports, including London Heathrow, London City, Manchester, and Edinburgh—potentially impacting as many as 50,000 travellers. SWISS typically operates between 10 and 15 flights daily from the UK, with Heathrow seeing the most departures. UK routes account for 10–12% of the total flight cuts.
Aviation expert Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, says the cancellations point to wider problems within the European aviation sector.
“We're not seeing a demand problem, but a staffing and scheduling bottleneck,” he said, calling SWISS’s move “just the tip of the iceberg.”
While passengers flying directly to Zurich are most immediately affected, the ripple effect could extend to those with onward long-haul connections or travellers planning future return trips via Switzerland.
Radchenko added:
“With this latest wave of SWISS cancellations, summer just got more complicated for UK travellers.”
What Affected Travellers Need to Know
Under EU Regulation 261, travellers whose flights are cancelled are entitled to a full refund or free rebooking on an alternative route.
If SWISS cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure, you may also be eligible for compensation ranging from £220 to £520, depending on the length of your journey and the delay.
Long-Haul and European Routes Affected
SWISS confirmed that long-haul routes to Shanghai and Chicago will face disruptions through June, with additional cancellations on the Chicago route expected in September and October. European destinations from Zurich and Geneva are also affected, with schedule reductions in place through the autumn.
In a statement, the airline explained:
“With these proactive adjustments to our flight schedule, our aim is to maintain the highest possible level of stability and reliability for our passengers.”
“We regret that we are unable to offer the affected connections as originally planned,”
Travellers are advised to check their flight status and explore their refund or rebooking options promptly.
This latest wave of cancellations is a strong reminder of why travel insurance is essential, especially during peak seasons. While EU regulations offer some financial protection, travel insurance can help cover extra expenses not reimbursed by the airline, such as hotel stays, meals, and alternative transport. It also provides peace of mind if your trip is delayed, cut short, or affected by further industry-wide issues.
