Will the US–UK Trade Deal Change How You Travel?

On May 8, the United States and the United Kingdom announced a new trade agreement called the US-UK Economic Prosperity Deal (EPD). The deal aims to strengthen national security and support businesses in both countries, according to the White House.

This announcement came shortly after former President Trump introduced a 10% baseline tariff on all U.S. trade partners, with even higher tariffs for certain countries and products.

Key Points of the Deal

  • Tariffs on British Goods: The 10% tariff on British imports into the U.S. will stay in place.
  • British Cars: The US will lower the import tax on British-made cars from 25% to 10%—but only for the first 100,000 vehicles. Any cars above that limit will face a much higher 27.5% tariff. Cars are the UK’s biggest export to the US
  • No Tariffs on Medicines, Aluminum, or Steel: The agreement removes tariffs on pharmaceutical products and also on aluminum, steel, and some goods made from these metals—like machinery, gym equipment, and furniture.
  • Agriculture:
    • The UK will no longer charge tariffs on US beef and ethanol.
    • In return, British farmers can export up to 13,000 metric tons of goods to the US without paying tariffs.

Will It Impact Travel?

So far, there’s no clear evidence the trade deal will directly affect passenger travel between the US and the UK. However, some related business deals have made headlines:

  • US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said a UK airline recently bought $10 million worth of Boeing airplanes.
  • The next day, British Airways’ parent company announced it had purchased 32 Boeing jets.

What's the Bigger Picture?

The US government says the deal is meant to:

  • Strengthen the US–UK economic relationship
  • Make trade easier for businesses
  • Create high-paying jobs on both sides
  • Set the foundation for future agreements in other areas

The deal isn’t final yet. The US and UK are still negotiating details and plan to expand it over time.
