UK Updates Travel Advisory for Bangladesh

The UK government has revised its travel advisory for Bangladesh, highlighting increased risks of terrorism, political unrest, and criminal activities.

The updated notice, issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and the British High Commission in Dhaka, urges travellers to exercise heightened caution while in the country.

The caution emphasises the risk of terrorist attacks, especially in areas frequented by foreign nationals, such as busy markets, religious sites, and political meetings. It warns that certain groups may target individuals whose lifestyles or opinions they believe are harmful to Islamic ideals.

“Attacks could be indiscriminate,” the FCDO warns, citing past incidents involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in major cities. Minority religious communities, police, and security forces have been specific targets in prior attacks.

Bangladeshi authorities are actively working to prevent planned attacks, leading to increased security presence and potential restrictions on movement without prior notice. Foreign nationals are urged to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and follow local authorities' advice, especially in and around police facilities and travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

The advisory also specifically warns against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts due to heightened security concerns. It notes that FCDO assistance in restricted areas is severely limited.

Political Unrest and Violence

The advisory highlights recent political instability in Bangladesh, particularly during July and August, when widespread protests and strikes resulted in vandalism, arson, and fatal violence. Ongoing rallies and marches are flagged as potential flashpoints for further unrest, which could escalate into clashes with law enforcement.

Police stations have reportedly been damaged, and some personnel have not resumed duty, raising concerns about law enforcement capabilities during emergencies.

The advisory also details an uptick in criminal activities, including armed robbery, violent crime, and gang-related incidents in Dhaka and other cities. Travellers are cautioned about thefts involving motorcycles or CNG-powered vehicles, as well as the risks of sexual assaults and other violent offenses.

Travel Recommendations

UK authorities recommend the following precautions for anyone planning to travel to Bangladesh:

  • Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings, especially near police stations or security establishments.
  • Avoid Crowds: Steer clear of large gatherings, political demonstrations, and areas with a heavy police presence.
  • Limit Movement: Adhere to any local movement restrictions and security directives.
  • Secure Belongings: Remain cautious about personal safety and secure your belongings to prevent theft.

The British government also advises travellers to monitor local news and updates to stay informed about the evolving security situation.
