Russian Visitors Granted 90 Days Visa-Free In Thailand
From November 1, 2023, to April 30, 2024, Thailand will grant Russian tourists a 90-day visa-free stay, an extension from the previous 30-day limit.
The move comes as tourists from the country have had increasingly few options for travel, given Moscow's war on Ukraine, the impact of sanctions, travel restrictions, and a weakening ruble.
Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports revealed that Russian tourists ranked fifth among international visitors to Thailand between January 1 and October 1, 2023.
With nearly one million Russian tourists already gracing the picturesque country, tourism authorities are optimistic about the prospects of this extended visa-free status. The aim is to stimulate an even greater influx of Russian tourists during the peak travel season, which spans from November to March.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Increasing the length of stay for Russian tourists came before Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha met with Putin at the Belt and Road Initiative forum in Beijing.
Both discussed increasing trade and cultural ties between Thailand and Russia, while Srettha praised their “long-standing close relationship” and invited Putin for a visit to the Southeast Asian country.
