Indonesia’s New Digital Nomad Visa

Indonesia is introducing a new digital nomad visa to entice more remote workers to the country.

With the pandemic-induced lockdown, people started working from the comfort of their own homes. With many countries now opening their workspaces post the pandemic, more people continue to work remotely.

The visa hopes to incentivise digital nomads to work from popular tourist destinations like the island of Bali. For years, Bali has become a digital nomad hotspot with its gorgeous beaches, colourful culture, and affordable cost of living making it an ideal paradise for remote workers to live and work in.

Digital Nomads are workers who are digitally connected to their work and who choose to work remotely and independently as they travel and soak up the sights of the destinations they decide to visit.

Longer Visa Duration

The digital nomad visa will be valid for five years. It will allow remote workers to live in the country tax-free, as long as their income derives from businesses based outside of Indonesia.

The special permit is designed to be a simple solution for foreigners wanting to work in the Asian country. The five-year visa would become the longest digital nomad visa available compared to other countries.

The purpose of the Digital Nomad Visa is to get over 3.6 million overseas travellers into the country over the next year to explore spiritual retreats as well as the eco-tourism of Indonesia.

As the new digital nomad visa has yet to be implemented, little information is available on how to apply for the visa.

Currently, there are various types of visas available in the country for digital nomads such as Visa on Arrival (VoA), Tourist of Cultural Visa, and the country’s Free Visa. However, the duration of these visas is between 30 and 180 days.
