The U.S. Rejected Call To Ban Russians

The United States (US) rejected the appeal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to impose a blanket visa ban on Russians as conflict continues to rise in Ukraine.

While the US has been an ardent supporter of Ukraine during the Russian invasion, the White House has stated that a blanket ban will close any opportunity for “dissidents and people vulnerable to human rights abuses”

On 22 August, a state department spokesperson said the White House had already imposed visa restrictions for Kremlin officials but it made it clear that its focus would be on identifying those involved in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and holding them accountable.

“The US wouldn’t want to close off pathways to refuge and safety for Russia’s dissidents or others who are vulnerable to human rights abuses,”

“We’ve also been clear that it is important to draw a line between the actions of the Russian government and its policies in Ukraine, and the people of Russia,”

A few weeks ago, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, urged the European Union and the US to impose a visa ban on Russian nationals, saying Russians should ‘live on their own world until they change their philosophy.

On the other hand, several European countries have already imposed visa restrictions and are calling on other countries to ban Russians from travelling, while countries like Portugal, Cyprus, and Greece have refused to join the call.

Additionally, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, also revealed he doesn’t support the notion of banning Russian citizens from obtaining visas and travelling to Europe.

The countries in Europe that support an entry ban on Russian tourists include Czechia, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Denmark, Lithuania, and Poland.
