UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for EU Travellers

From 2 April 2025, EU nationals traveling to the UK for tourism or transit must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure. This requirement, previously only for non-EU nationals, will now apply to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens including those simply passing through the UK.

You don’t need an ETA if you are a British or Irish citizen, already have a UK visa or permission to stay, hold a British Overseas Territories citizen passport, or live in Ireland and are traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.

The UK government introduced the ETA to strengthen border security and simplify the entry process for travellers. EU nationals can start applying for an ETA from 5 March 2025.

EU nationals with Pre-Settled or Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) must ensure their eVisa is linked to their valid passport before travel. Failure to do so may result in boarding denial.

This policy change is significant for EU nationals, who previously entered the UK with just a passport. With the ETA requirement in place, airlines and travel businesses will need to adjust their operations, and travelers should plan ahead to avoid disruptions.

While the transition may cause some initial confusion, the system is expected to improve immigration processes by enabling better tracking of travellers before they arrive in the UK.

How to Apply for a UK ETA

Most travellers can apply for an ETA using the UK government’s mobile app, with decisions typically issued within three days via email.

You need a valid passport, an email address, and a debit or credit card to pay the fee of £10 (rising to £16 later in 2025). You also have to answer a set of suitability questions but you don't need to enter your travel details.

Once approved, the ETA is digitally linked to your passport and is valid for two years. You won’t need to show additional documents at the UK border. However, if you get a new passport, you must apply for a new ETA.

An ETA can be refused for reasons including criminal records, past immigration breaches, or unpaid NHS debts. In such cases, a standard UK visa may be required instead.

With the UK implementing stricter border controls, staying informed and preparing in advance will be essential for a hassle-free trip.
