More British Nationals Switching Citizenship for EU Access

A growing number of British nationals are applying for Irish citizenship, with applications reaching record levels since Brexit. Irish authorities have granted citizenship to over 5,000 people in recent years, and British citizens have consistently been among the top applicants.
Since 2021, applications for Irish citizenship have surged, driven by British nationals seeking the advantages of an EU passport. The trend reflects growing dissatisfaction with post-Brexit realities, including restricted access to EU markets and economic challenges in the UK.
One of the key routes for obtaining Irish nationality is the Foreign Births Register (FBR), which allows people with Irish ancestry to claim citizenship. Applications through this route rose 15% in 2024, reaching 23,456.
Post-Brexit Reality Fuels Demand for Irish Passports
The surge in applications also reflects broader frustrations with Brexit.
The impact of Brexit became more evident from 2022, as the challenges of traveling with a non-EU passport became more pronounced. For many, obtaining an Irish passport has become a practical solution to bypass long non-EU queues at airports.
In 2024, British citizens became the second-largest nationality granted Irish citizenship, just behind Indian nationals. According to Irish Central, 614 British nationals obtained Irish passports last year, making up 12.2% of all new Irish citizens.
Beyond citizenship, British nationals are increasingly investing in European property despite tighter regulations. Countries like Spain have introduced steep taxes on foreign property investors, a move that particularly affects British citizens looking to buy second homes abroad.
As Brexit continues to reshape mobility and economic opportunities, an increasing number of British nationals are turning to Ireland—not just for its strong ties to the UK, but for the freedom of movement and benefits that come with an EU passport.
