Vietnam Extends Visa Waiver for Schengen Nationals Until 2028

Vietnam has extended its visa-free entry policy for passport holders from eight Schengen countries, allowing them to visit without a visa until March 14, 2028.

This extension applies to nationals of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, who can stay in Vietnam for up to 45 days per visit without needing a visa.

Additionally, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Poland are also eligible for visa-free travel under a separate temporary exemption. This policy, which came into effect on March 1, 2025, will remain valid until December 31, 2025, permitting stays of up to 45 days for tourism purposes.

Vietnam is actively working to boost international tourism, setting a goal of welcoming 23 million foreign visitors in 2025. In 2024, the country saw over 17.5 million international arrivals, a 39.5% increase from the previous year.

Alongside visa-free entry, Vietnam is also expanding its e-visa system, which allows travellers to apply online for single or multiple-entry visas, valid for up to 90 days.

Competing with Regional Tourism Hotspots

By making entry easier, Vietnam is positioning itself as a top travel destination in Southeast Asia, aiming to compete with Thailand and Singapore, which currently attract the most European tourists.

The visa waiver policy, first introduced in August 2023 and formalised on March 7, 2025, is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to revitalise tourism and international trade after the COVID-19 pandemic. The government’s continued focus on ease of travel and economic growth highlights its commitment to attracting more European visitors.

With its rich culture, scenic landscapes, and now more accessible entry rules, Vietnam is becoming an increasingly attractive option for international travellers.
