Borderless Journeys: Top Passport Rankings for 2024
A significant shift has occurred in the realm of passports.
Singapore and Japan held the title for the most powerful travel documents in the last five years, providing their citizens with unparalleled visa-free access, this year marks a change.
The latest ranking of the world's most powerful passports for 2024 has shown a rather unexpected six countries sharing the top spot.
Taking the lead on the Henley Passport Index 2024 are four European nations—France, Germany, Italy, and Spain—joining Singapore and Japan at the top spot.
The annual Henley Passport Index scores countries’ travel documents according to how many destinations they provide access to, either visa-free or with a visa on arrival.
All offer access to 194 destinations out of 227 worldwide, visa-free.
South Korea is tied for second place with Finland and Sweden, with visa-free travel to 193 countries, while Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands are tied for third spot with visa-free travel to 192 destinations.
This year, the United Kingdom has risen two positions to take the fourth spot alongside Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, and Portugal, all of which give access to 191 countries.
Greece, Malta, and Switzerland round out the top five, all offering visa-free access to 190 destinations.
The United States has held the seventh rank, with visa-free entry to 188 destinations. It's been a decade since the UK and the US shared first place on the index in 2014.
At the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan offers the least powerful passport, giving access to 28 destinations without obtaining a visa prior to travel.
