Countries Urge Caution for UK Travel Amidst Violent Incidents
Several countries have issued warnings to their citizens about travelling to the United Kingdom (UK), following a series of anti-immigrant riots across Britain.
Over the past week, violent riots have erupted in various UK cities, including popular tourist destinations such as Manchester and Liverpool.
Rioters have attacked hotels housing asylum seekers, clashed with police, and started fires, leading to nearly 400 arrests. The majority of the protesters are from far-right groups, and their actions have resulted in injuries to police officers and significant property damage.
In response, the government has promised increased police presence and swift criminal justice.
Countries Issue Travel Alerts
Governments are advising travellers to avoid areas where demonstrations, protests, and large gatherings are taking place. Travellers should also expect a heightened security presence in these areas.
Nigeria, Malaysia, and Indonesia have all issued travel advisories, urging their citizens to be on high alert due to the ongoing unrest.
Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the first to react, issuing an urgent notice to Malaysians in the UK. The ministry is closely monitoring the situation and urges its citizens to “stay away from protest areas” and “remain vigilant.”
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a travel alert on Monday, warning its citizens about “demonstrations by far-right and other extra-parliamentary groups” in parts of the UK, noting an increased risk of violence and disorder.
The Indonesian Embassy in London has also urged its citizens to increase vigilance, avoid large crowds, and stay clear of potential demonstration sites.
In an update issued as of August 5, Australia is recommending that its citizens “exercise a high degree of caution” when travelling to the United Kingdom
Canada has updated its travel advice for those heading to the UK, noting the ongoing demonstrations and violent clashes between protesters and police since July 30, 2024.
Official Responses and Safety Measures
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has assured communities that they will be kept safe, while Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has pledged additional support for the police, including covering costs for officers working overtime.
Travellers are advised to assess their personal circumstances and decide whether they feel comfortable continuing with their trip.
