UK Updates Travel Advice for Israel
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Israel, easing restrictions for several popular tourist destinations.
Previously, the FCDO advised against “all travel” or “all but essential travel” to most parts of Israel.
The revised guidance applies to major tourist destinations, including:
- Tel Aviv
- Jerusalem
- Eilat
- The Dead Sea
- Galilee
- Haifa
Travellers are now encouraged to consult the latest advice before visiting these areas, rather than being restricted from travelling entirely.
Areas Still Under Advisory
Despite the eased restrictions, the FCDO continues to advise against all but essential travel to certain parts of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
These include:
- Gaza and the West Bank
- Areas within 500 meters of the borders with Syria and Gaza
- The region between the Lebanon border and (but not including) Route 89, excluding Nahariyya
The updated travel guidance comes 15 months after stricter advisories were imposed in October 2023. According to the FCDO, the frequency of rocket attacks has significantly decreased. However, the department warns of an “increased risk of political tension” that may lead to demonstrations and clashes, particularly around anniversaries of significant events.
The Israeli government declared a nationwide state of emergency on 7 October 2023, which remains active. The FCDO highlights the possibility of international air and land borders closing at short notice and advises visitors to monitor official updates closely.
Travel Precautions for Visitors
Travelers planning a trip to Israel are encouraged to:
- Stay informed about the latest developments via the FCDO website.
- Exercise caution and avoid areas prone to demonstrations or clashes.
- Confirm flight schedules and border conditions before traveling.
This change in travel advice reflects improved security conditions in many parts of Israel while acknowledging ongoing challenges in specific areas.
