Italy To Cracks Down On Short-Term Accommodation
The rise of short-term rental platforms, most notably Airbnb, has revolutionised the way people find accommodations while travelling. However, the rapid growth of these platforms has also sparked concerns about their impact on local housing markets.
Italy is the latest popular tourist destination to consider placing a limit on short-term tourism rentals of residential properties in historic city centres in order to free up more housing for residents.
Italy's Tourism Ministry released the first draft of a new law which it said would curb short-term tourist rentals, including Airbnb lets, around the country.
It intended to address not just the growing scarcity of cheap housing in major Italian cities, but also to provide a partial solution to ongoing overcrowding in numerous destinations for travellers.
It's a long way from being legislation at this stage, with at least one round of further amendments. However, the proposal has triggered a heated debate in the country between locals, businesses, hotel owners, cities, and the national government.
Local Ordinance on Short-Term Rental
At the moment, Italy’s short-term rental market is currently regulated by local ordinances.
Recently, the Italian city of Florence announced a ban on new short-term private holiday rentals, such as Airbnb listings, in the city’s historic centre.
The move is part of an effort to ensure there is available housing for full-time residents.
Venice and Milan are also debating introducing restrictions.
How It Would Affect Tourists
The new decree includes measures like a two-night minimum stay and a new type of identification for property listings.
For tourists, this could mean far fewer accommodation options, especially for those who enjoy the comfort and convenience that short-term rentals offer in comparison to hotels.
