Cameron’s Support for Syrian Refugees

On 7 September our Prime Minister in his statement to the House of Commons proposed that the UK should resettle up to 20,000 Syrians (https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/syria-refugees-and-counter-terrorism-prime-ministers-statement). David Cameron announced the increase of the UK aid budget with a further £100 million, which will go to Syria, Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.

He also discussed the problems Lebanon is facing and the threat from Islamist extremism during his visit to this country (https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/prime-minister-david-cameron-statement-in-lebanon). He promised Prime Minister Tammam Salam to help strengthen Lebanon’s borders, train the Lebanese Armed Forces and support local communities. He recognised immense efforts of the Lebanese people who hosted Syrian refugees since the beginning of the humanitarian crisis in Syria. Britain will invest £20m a year for the next three years to help Syrian children in public schools, providing textbooks for children aged six to fifteen. UK will also continue to support Lebanese communities – ‘helping to protect jobs, build roads and improve water supply’. Richard Harrington was appointed for ‘coordinating the provision of government support to Syrian refugees’ in the UK.
