Travel Chaos: London Underground Faces Week-Long Strikes

Londoners are bracing for a week of severe disruptions on the London Underground as a labour dispute escalates, threatening to halt services for the majority of the upcoming week.

Strikes by London Underground workers will go ahead from January 5 to 12 after last-ditch talks failed to resolve a pay dispute.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) will walk out throughout the next week, causing huge disruption to services.

The union is in a dispute over a 5% pay offer and other issues including travel facilities.

“Transport for London has failed to avert this strike by not offering a deal that was acceptable to our members on London Underground.

“We do not take strike action lightly but we are determined to get a negotiated settlement on pay, travel facilities and a grading structure that means our members will not lose out.”

RMT spokesperson

Transport for London (TfL) has urged passengers to only travel on the strike days if their journey is “essential”.

Other TfL workers on bus, DLR, London Overground and Elizabeth line services won't be striking, but those services will be busier and affected by station closures at stations that also serve London Underground lines.

One-way or queueing systems may also be in place, it says.

The strike began on January 5, but the effects will not be apparent until Sunday, January 7.

The most significant disruption is likely to occur between Monday and Thursday.

Strike Dates

Strikes by London Underground workers will be as follows:

– Friday, January 5, 1800 hours, to Saturday, January 6, 17:59 – maintenance train workers at Ruislip Depot

– Sunday, January 7, 0001, to Monday, January 8, 23:59 – LU Control Centre, track access control and power control

– Monday, January 8, 0001, to Wednesday, January 10, 23:59 – including station staff and train operators

– Tuesday, January 9, 0001, to Thursday, January 11, 23:59 – service controllers, signallers and line information

Passengers are encouraged to use TfL's journey planner to check train service availability. The planner will be updated regularly, and travellers are recommended to check closer to their desired departure time for the most up-to-date information.
