Germany Student Visa: Increased Required Proof Of Funds
Starting in the 2024/25 academic year, international students planning to study in Germany will need to demonstrate increased financial resources as part of their visa application process.
The new requirement raises the annual proof of financial resources from €11,208 to €11,904, marking a roughly 6% increase.
As of September, non-EU students must prove they have €934 per month to cover their living expenses while studying in Germany. This adjustment ensures that students have sufficient funds to support themselves, reflecting the rising cost of living in the country.
Germany continues to be a top destination for international students. In the 2022/23 academic year, the country hosted a record 367,578 international students, according to data from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Early reports suggest this number is expected to grow even further in the current academic year.
Methods to Prove Financial Resources
Students can meet this requirement through various means, including:
- Parental Income: Documentation showing that parents have sufficient income to support the student.
- Scholarships: Proof of receiving a recognized scholarship that covers the necessary amount.
- Blocked Account (Sperrkonto): A popular option, this account restricts access to funds and only allows a fixed amount to be withdrawn each month, ensuring students have consistent financial support.
In recent months, the German government has introduced several measures to support international students. These include expanded part-time work rights, allowing students to work while searching for courses or during preparatory courses. Additionally, federal and state governments are working on a new internationalisation strategy aimed at enhancing the recruitment and retention of international students.
Germany’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for international students makes it an increasingly attractive destination for those seeking quality education and valuable cultural experiences.
