US Passport Online Renewal Is Available Again
The US State Department has reopened its online passport renewal portal, reintroducing a convenient service that has been on hold for over a year.
There are a limited number of slots for US passport holders to renew online each day. The window for US passport renewal applications opens each day at 1 p.m. ET and closes when it reaches an unspecified number.
This trial service, available to a select group of eligible travellers, aims to simplify the passport renewal process for Americans.
Renewing your passport online doesn't mean that you'll receive the passport any sooner than usual. Expedited service still has to be done by mail.
The current processing time for a standard passport renewal is six to eight weeks.
Who Can Use This Service?
To qualify for online renewal, you must meet specific criteria:
Citizenship and Age: You must be a U.S. citizen, at least 25 years old, and have had a passport with a 10-year validity.
Current Passport Status: Your passport must be in good condition—not lost, stolen, damaged, or mutilated.
Travel Plans: You shouldn't have any international travel plans within the next eight weeks from the application date.
Application Specifics: You're applying for a regular passport and can't request changes to your name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth.
Payment and Photo Requirements: You can pay with a credit card, debit card, or ACH payment and must upload a digital passport photo in JPEG format.
Recent Passport Issuance: Your most recent passport was issued between nine and 15 years ago, even if it's expired.
If you don't meet the online renewal criteria, you can still renew your passport by mail or in person at a passport agency. Detailed eligibility requirements are available on the State Department's website.
By reopening the online passport renewal portal, the State Department aims to make renewing your passport a more straightforward and efficient process.
How It Works
Before you can apply for an online passport renewal, you'll need to create a MyTravelGov account. Once you have completed the authentication process, you should be able to access the online passport renewal page.
If the online passport renewal application window is not open, you'll receive a message that you'll need to return and try again tomorrow. If you're lucky enough to begin the application, you'll need the following items:
Your existing US passport
A digital passport photo
Credit card, debit card or your bank's routing and account numbers for ACH transfer
You will need to enter information about your current passport, your legal name and whether you want a passport book, passport card or both, update your digital passport photo, and then finally your payment information.
You will receive two email verifications after you submit your renewal application. One week after you apply, you can sign up for email updates about your passport using the State Department's online passport status system.
