New Travel Warnings Issued for British Tourists Visiting Iceland
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated travel advice for British holidaymakers heading to Iceland, focusing on driving conditions and volcanic activity.
The FCDO has highlighted key differences between driving in Iceland and the United Kingdom (UK), urging travellers to exercise caution. Speed limits in Iceland are generally lower, and the distances between towns are much greater than in the UK. Some main roads are gravel or dirt tracks, and many routes are narrower than those typically found in the UK.
Drivers should also be aware that certain roads and bridges may have only a single lane with designated passing areas, requiring extra caution. If you plan to explore Iceland's highlands, the FCDO strongly recommends using a four-wheel drive vehicle and driving slowly when crossing rivers. River levels can change rapidly, even within the same day, making these crossings particularly hazardous.
Iceland's weather can be extreme and unpredictable, with strong winds that can cause significant damage to rental cars, especially from sand and ash. The FCDO warns that previous tourists have faced costly repair bills due to such damage, and breakdown recovery in remote areas can be expensive.
Iceland's volcanic activity also presents a serious risk to travellers. The FCDO advises tourists to stay informed about the latest developments and follow local advice closely.
Whether you're exploring Iceland's stunning landscapes or navigating its challenging roads, it's crucial to stay prepared and informed.
