Denmark Extends Deadline For Post-Brexit Residency
UK nationals residing in Denmark will have an additional nine months to apply for the right of residency, as Denmark has extended the deadline for such applications until the end of 2023.
After the UK left the EU, British nationals who were already living in Denmark before the end of 2020 had to apply to extend their residency and get a Danish residence card as per the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
The deadline was initially set for December 21, 2021 however more than 300 British nationals have not applied for a new residence status.
The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) has confirmed that the original deadline of December 21, 2021, will not immediately become effective.
This extended deadline will apply to all British nationals who applied after the original deadline and whose applications were subsequently not processed.
The authorities will carefully consider cases where extenuating circumstances led to a delayed application, ensuring that each case is assessed on its own merits. If legitimate reasons for the tardiness are found, they will be processed accordingly. However, if no reasonable justification for the late submission is identified, such applications will be held in stasis until further notice.
British citizens whose applications were processed but were rejected because they did not meet the criteria for ongoing residence under the Withdrawal Agreement will not be given the chance to reapply.

British Nationals in Denmark Decreased
The extension of the application deadline follows a sharp decline in the number of British nationals in Denmark after Brexit.
Denmark Statistics has reported that only 854 British citizens moved to Denmark in 2021, which is less than the 1,405 who moved in 2020 and 1,584 in the preceding year.
These rates are the lowest recorded number of British citizens moving to Denmark since 2007.
Following the UK's exit from the European Union, British nationals now have to follow stricter rules, like applying for a residency permit within a specific time frame, to keep living in the EU legally.
