UK Passport: Travel Warning For Red Passport Holders

Planning an overseas trip this year?

British citizens who still hold a red passport have been issued a warning to check their passports before they start their journey due to strict entry rules in other countries.

A large number of countries have a rule about your passport before entering, which may impact those who don’t have the blue British passports which leaves them at risk of violating the ‘six-month validity rule'.

A handful of nations require your passport to be valid for another six months before you visit, thus older passport holders risk having their documents expire too soon.

This is crucial for red passport holders to check the expiry date of their documents to ensure they aren't turned away at any borders.

After the UK left the European Union, it is required that passports must be less than 10 years old on the day of arrival in the EU.

Passports are widely believed to only last 10 years, but passports issued before 1 October 2018 might have extra months added to their expiry date if the previous passport was renewed before it fully expired.

Some popular holiday destinations that have the six-month rule are Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, and  Singapore.

Schengen countries and some popular European destinations have a three-month passport validity rule.
