New Border Measures to Simplify Travel Between Hungary and Romania
Good news for travellers! Hungary and Romania are making it easier than ever to explore both countries.
A recent announcement from Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó revealed plans to significantly improve cross-border travel, bringing these neighboring nations closer together.
Minister Szijjártó highlighted that the number of crossing points along the Hungarian-Romanian border has increased from 12 to 22, significantly reducing the average distance between them from 37 to 20 kilometers and making it much quicker and easier to reach your destination.
These improvements aim to eliminate the frustrating situation where residents on either side of the border had to travel long distances to visit family and friends, despite their proximity.
In addition, plans are underway to further increase the number of crossings and upgrade existing infrastructure. Agreements have already been signed for the reconstruction of the St. Gellért Bridge in Magyarcsanád and the development of a railway line connecting Szeged in southern Hungary to Timisoara (Temesvár) in Romania.
Both governments are exploring additional ways to expand the border network, demonstrating their dedication to enhancing regional connectivity and collaboration.
A Shared Schengen Success Story
Romania's recent entry into the Schengen Area has been a game-changer. Travellers now enjoy seamless border crossings and faster travel times between the two countries.
Travellers will be able to explore both countries with greater ease and efficiency while enjoying a more comfortable and convenient travel experience.
This change is timely as the EU prepares to launch the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) later this year.
The ETIAS will simplify entry for visa-exempt travellers, relying on improved infrastructure like this to manage higher visitor numbers.
By tackling these mobility challenges now, Hungary and Romania are laying the groundwork for the EU to handle migration more effectively and equitably in the future.
