UK Issues Travel Warning To Portugal

The UK Foreign Office has issued an updated travel warning for those planning on coming to Portugal at the end of July and early August.

The warning is specifically aimed at travellers planning to visit Lisbon.  It comes after Pope Francis announced his plans to visit the Portuguese capital for World Youth Day which sees a global gathering of young Catholics.

Pope Francis is staying in Lisbon for the length of the visit but will make a day trip to the Fatima shrine on 5 August.

In a statement, the Foreign Office says:

“Portugal will host a visit from the Pope as part of World Youth Day from 1-6 August. During this period, you should expect an increase in the number of people using public transport and other facilities in the Lisbon area. Be prepared for road closures and restrictions on accessing the city by car on days when major events are taking place.

“There will be enhanced security checks at land borders from July 22 to August 7.”

Individuals planning to visit Lisbon during this period must familiarise themselves with the authorised border crossing points and allow more time to enter or exit Portugal.
