New Transit Visa Requirement For Georgian and Russian Travellers in the UK

The United Kingdom has expanded its transit visa requirements to include Georgian and Russian citizens.

This significant change, effective from September 8, 2023, comes as part of an effort to address the misuse of the UK's transit provisions by individuals from these countries, particularly in relation to asylum claims.

Under the amended Immigration (Passenger Transit Visa) Order 2014, citizens of Georgia and Russia planning to pass through the UK en route to another destination now need to obtain a transit visa. This means they must apply for this visa at least 48 hours before their scheduled departure for the UK.

Travellers arriving in the UK for transit purposes on or before October 5, 2023, and who booked their travel before September 8, 2023, will be exempt from this new requirement. This grace period offers a buffer for those with pre-existing travel plans.

The new transit visa requirement has direct consequences for Georgian and Russian nationals travelling through the UK on their way to other countries. It adds another layer of paperwork and preparation, which may influence the decisions these nationals make when planning overseas travel.
