Strike Action In May To Coincide With King’s Coronation

Security staff at Heathrow Airport are planning to strike over the King’s Coronation weekend.

The new walkouts are planned from 4 to 10 May and from 25 to 26 May as part of a dispute over pay.

Unite union, which represents the security staff, says Heathrow Airport is set for “May mayhem” warning that the industrial action will cause “inevitable disruption and delays”.

The strikes have the potential to cause disruption for millions of passengers travelling through the airport over the weekend of the King’s Coronation which will be held on 06 May at Westminster Abbey.

But Heathrow says it has managed to keep the airport running smoothly during the previous industrial action. The walkouts over the busy Easter weekend involved workers at Terminal 5 and guards responsible for checking cargo that enters the airport.

Terminal 5 is mainly used by British Airways and it cancelled around 5 per cent of flights and stopped selling tickets on previous strike days.

No announcement yet on which airlines will be impacted by the upcoming Heathrow strike. If you find yourself travelling during a UK airport strike, you should arrive at the airport 2 to 3 hours before your departure time.

What To Expect During Coronation Weekend

There's another strike happening during the bank holiday weekend. Traffic wardens are set to join the ever-growing list of sectors that have chosen to take industrial action over disputes over pay and working conditions that could cause traffic chaos over the King’s coronation weekend.

With traffic officers on strike,  there will be an impact on the enforcement of parking regulations and the distribution of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs). In the past, the penalty notices have deterred motorists from seeking ‘free parking’ or parking unsafely during strikes.

A large influx of visitors is expected to be in London during the coronation and the absence of traffic officers could lead to an increase in traffic incidents, risk of congestion, accidents and delays.
