Canada Digital Nomad Visa: Canada’s New Remote Work Scheme

All around the world, countries are offering specialist visas for foreign nationals who can work from anywhere.

Craving a change from your remote work set-up? Well, here's some exciting news – Canada is actively working on a digital nomad strategy.

Canada is looking to plug a national skills shortage with people who work for foreign companies, mainly targeting those in the tech industry.

Under the scheme, remote workers will be able to live and work in the country for up to six months.

The exact details of Canada’s new scheme are still being developed although it’s worth mentioning that Canadian visa laws are already quite favourable to digital nomads.

On a visitor visa alone, remote workers can currently work for up to six months in the country.

For countries that are exempted from getting a visa to Canada such as the UK and the EU, remote workers only need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

Foreign visitors will not be required to meet income requirements as they can enter just as tourists. This makes the visa one of the most relaxed remote working schemes in the world.

Future of Digital Nomads in Canada

The Canadian government also said that Digital Nomads who initially enter Canada to work remotely may also seek employment opportunities in Canada in a Canadian Company.

“In the months ahead, IRCC will collaborate with public and private partners alike to determine whether additional policies to attract digital nomads to Canada would be desirable.”

Canadian Government Press Statement.

If they receive a job offer from a Canadian employer they will be able to apply for a temporary work permit within Canada.

Cities in Canada For Digital Nomads
